Connecticut Family Law and Family-Violence Defense

Divorce, custody, and support cases are decided on details — and sometimes they arrive alongside a criminal charge. Attorney Daniel M. Morton handles both, from one office, so the two cases don’t work against each other.

Consultations by appointment. Criminal representation is limited to Connecticut matters arising from domestic or family-violence incidents.

WHAT THIS FIRM DOES

Two connected areas of Connecticut practice.

Morton Family & Criminal Law focuses on two connected areas of Connecticut practice.

Family law

Divorce, custody and parenting time, child support, post-judgment modification, enforcement and contempt, and prenuptial and postnuptial agreements — in the Hartford Judicial District and the surrounding courts.

Family-violence criminal defense

Domestic and family-violence criminal defense. Connecticut criminal charges arising from a domestic or family-violence incident. This is a limited criminal practice — the firm does not handle unrelated DUI, drug, theft, or other criminal matters.

Civil restraining orders. A restraining order under C.G.S. §46b-15 is a civil family matter, not a criminal case. The firm handles these from either side, subject to conflict screening.

WHEN BOTH CASES ARE RUNNING AT ONCE

Two courthouses. Two schedules. One strategy.

An arrest during a separation creates two files in two courthouses on two schedules. A protective order entered at arraignment can change your parenting time before the family court has ruled on anything. What you say in one case can follow you into the other.

Most firms handle one side or the other, and the client ends up coordinating between two lawyers who have never spoken. Attorney Morton has practiced on both sides of that line — family litigation and criminal defense arising from family violence — and can see how a decision in one court lands in the other.

PRACTICE AREAS

Focused representation for the legal issues that shape family transitions.

01

Divorce

Connecticut is not a 50/50 state, and the court can reach property you brought into the marriage.

Legal custody, physical custody, and the parenting plan that sets actual time.

03

Child Support

Guideline calculation, deviations, and Connecticut’s college-support statute.

04

Modification

Changing custody, support, or alimony after judgment.

05

Enforcement & Contempt

When an order is ignored, on either side of the motion.

06

Prenuptial & Postnuptial Agreements

Planning around Connecticut’s all-property rule.

07

Domestic & Family Violence Criminal Defense

Connecticut criminal charges arising from a domestic or family-violence incident.
